Bald Eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalus)
Status: special concern
Bald eagles are found all across North America from Alaska to Florida and as far south as Central Mexico. A mostly solitary animal, they have been known to hunt cooperatively and often will snatch prey from other hunters. There primary diet is fish and they can most often be seen perching in coniferous or deciduous trees in area adjacent to large bodies of water. Bald Eagles have strong; powerful wings and can soar and glide for hundreds of kilometers a day while exploring their vast territories. Since conservation efforts began in the late 1960’s their numbers have recovered and in 2007, they were removed from the Endangered Species List. But continued conservation is needed to keep the populations of these majestic birds healthy and strong.
