FAB Forest and Nature Schools

Make connections, be curious, and have fun!

Join us on our next adventure, as we wander the forests, connect with the land, and have friendly encounters with the flora and fauna of the Frontenac Arch Biosphere. Learn by doing, ask questions, and uncover answers. Nature loving facilitators will be with you every step of the way, as you meet new friends and explore your own unique interests in the outdoors. Our days are a balance of forest play, experimentation, challenge, and creative expression. Prepare to be inspired!

What is Forest and Nature School?

You may have heard the term “Forest Kindergarten”, “Forest School”, or  “Wild School”. These programs and others are part of the Forest and Nature School movement. The intention is to support children as they create deeper connections with the local environment, through child-directed experiences. Programs may take place in a city park, open green space, or National Forest but what takes place, is always the same – Children at play in Nature. The goal of Forest School is to support children as they create deeper connections with Nature through play, exploration, and their natural curiosities. Facilitators follow in the footprints made by the child, observing and supporting wherever they are needed.

Forest School is an extension of the Forest and Nature School pedagogy, where knowledge and experiences are shared and gained about plants, food systems and the balance between nature and human needs. From planting seeds for tomorrow, to caring for the needs of the forest and the environment as a whole, children are engaged in learning principals of science, through the changing seasons. With a strong focus on the future, we aim to farm with nature and learn to overcome challenges and adapt to change. As the saying goes, give someone a fish and they will eat for one night, show someone how to fish and they will never go hungry.

Spring 2024

Our Spring Session offers a focus on embracing the awakening landscapes and warmer weather. Amidst the ponds, hills, forests and trails, we turn the spring elements into opportunities for fun and discovery. Children will delight in discovering emerging insects and animals, unfurling leaves, sprouting plants and building forts.

Each day is an adventure, with the soft mud of spring and the warm fresh air around us.  We use the spring setting to develop empathy, kindness, and resilience, teaching the children to appreciate the unique beauty and opportunities that the warmer season brings.

Our session is offered at Camp Traill, just south-west of Athens, the perfect backdrop for exploration, imaginative play and nature connections, community building and helping us showcase the enchanting transformations that spring brings.
