Christmas Bird Count For Kids

Christmas Bird Count for Kids

It doesn’t matter if you are a beginner or an expert, birding is fun for everyone. We are all here for the same reason – to share our love for birds and to help protect them through citizen science. Be a part of a greater community of volunteers who go out one day every winter and collect bird data. This data is then shared with Birds Canada and used by conservation biologists to give us a glimpse of bird populations throughout the country. Be a part of this amazing opportunity to help build science knowledge!

The day starts with expert guides teaching us how to identify local bird life, how to use binoculars, and keep track of what you see and hear. Then we go outside with our guides to find and count birds! We like to finish our morning with a campfire, sweet treats, and tallying our bird count.

How To Participate

Each year, the Frontenac Arch Biosphere hosts the Christmas Bird Count for Kids with a number of community partners. Please check back in late November, for updates on locations and schedules.

This event is great for the whole family. There are no limits on age or experience but you must enjoy cookies or at least a good campfire tale!

Why We Count the Birds?

With your help, the data we collect, as well as the data collected at over 450 Christmas Bird Counts across the country, will be used by Bird Studies Canada, for research and conservation of our winged friends.
